The iPod Touch Classroom

An online community for schools using iPod Touches in the classroom

I'm still a little new at this but I have heard of 10 year olds making apps.  Does anyone know of an online course or book that teaches how to make one?  Also, do you need special software and can they only be made on a Mac?  Do you then sell your app to apple? Thanks for any info!

To write an app i think you need the "software development kit" from Apple - it's a free download but will take a while as the files are huge.
You have to get the app approved by Apple, and they will take a small % of sales
I have downloaded this kit but i'm still working through the support material.... alternatively you can create a 'web-app' that is stored on your i-Pod home screen (the information is stored online so you need wi-fi coverage to access the app's content) - this is much easier ..... like creating a web page specific to your app's needs
I hope this is of some use
Thank you so much! Does the software development kit need to be on an apple computer? also, is the "web app" able to be put on multiple ipods but is not available for download thru the app store? thanks again!!!

I went to apple online and it seems you have to pay $100 to get the software. Is there a way to trial it first or get it for free?
Hi all-
This is my first post. I am an iPhone App developer and social entrepeneur looking to transform classrooms to include iPod Touches ( and soon the iPad).

Depending upon what type of app you want built, there are also a number of sites such as www.freeAppQuotes.com.

Hi Sandy, You can sign up as a registered developer which is free. This will allow you to develop apps and distribute to up to 100 friends (it does not give App Store access however). This would be the best place to start as it doesn't require any outlay.

To develop applications you'll need to learn Objective C (programming language) and understand how to use the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK). There are plenty of tutorials on iTunesU (Stanford course in particular), YouTube and the web (Search "Objective C tutorial"). As a standard developer you will also have access to the iPhone Dev Centre which has tutorials, forums and example code.

If you're not a programmer it will be require a fair bit of dedication to learn how to develop iPhone apps. You might also consider 'scoping' your application with a mockup tool like this http://iphonemockup.lkmc.ch/ and then asking someone else to develop for you.

Good luck with your journey.

Cheers,

John
Hi,
You could always create a .mobi (website that is viewable specifically for mobile devices such as smartphones, etc...
Wirenode seems to be one of the best at the moment, and is easy to learn.. (for people who don;t need code!)
And no, you don;t need a mac!

Here are some other sites:

You pay $99 to become a registered iPhone developer. Then you build one or have someone build one. Once it's approved by Apple, it goes live.

Depending on why you are developing the app, ie, do you want to be able to update it on your own?

Other options include paying a consultant to help you develop the app basics and teach you along the way so that you have a finished first version right away but later on you can update it on your own.

If you have some spare time, you can download the Stanford University iPhone Application Development course for free from iTunesU. Here is a link: http://itunes.stanford.edu/.

It's a complete course in video podcast format that teaches you everything about iPhone and iPod Touch app development. I'm working my way through it now. It's challenging, but fascinating and I'm learning a lot. Check it out.
Wow! You are all so great! Thank you so much!!! :)! --Sandy
